I'm still replaying Avenue Q in my head. Last Saturday, Mond and I watch the rerun of Avenue Q at RCBC Plaza, Makati. I have We were seated at the center seats at the second row so we had a good view of the stage. After 2 and a half hours of LOLs and LMAOs, I'm now understand why Avenue Q won the top Tony prize.
Avenue Q tells the story of newly-grad Princeton who moves to Avenue Q and meet a whole bunch of wacky neighbors while learning lessons about life and love. The show features puppets and is really a parody of Sesame Street. Robert Lopez' and Jeff Marx' score really does sound like it came from a children's show, and entrancingly tuneful. However, I wouldn't suggest you to bring a kid to see this since it contain adult themes, a lot of cussing and puppet sex. Yes, puppet sex! LOL. While sitting there waiting for the show to start, I noticed that the set design was kind of plain for me, unlike the Broadway version. It wouldn't hurt to put a little effort in building sets. There was a screen for showing hilarious clips and explaining certain 'vocabulary words' kinda like Sesame Street. It could have been placed at a much higher place though, since I believe that those sitting at the balcony cannot view it well. But even with a flawed set design, Avenue Q is about the material and the performance. Just ranting. :) The cast was outstanding. There was no bad egg and everyone had their moment. Felix Rivera was impressive as Princeton and I personally like his rendition of 'Purpose'. There was a kind of charm in him that makes his Princeton truly human. He also does a good job in playing and puppeteering the closeted Rod, and I love his transformation from one character to another. Rachel Alejandro shines as Kate/Lucy the Slut. I never thought she was that good! She transforms form one character to another with great ease, considering how her two characters have scenes together. My favorite number of hers was her sultry version 'Special'. Her voice as Lucy the Slut was so different from Stephanie D'Abruzzo (original B'way cast), and so much better. The supporting cast did a great job as well. Joel Trinidad stole the show in his role as Trekkie Monster, the resident pervert of Avenue Q. The audience went wild in 'The Internet is for Porn', where Trekkie sings about how he 'grabs his dick and double-click'. It was such a hilarious moment. Joel also has multiple roles, playing Nicky, rod's roommate, and one of the Bad Idea Bears (a parody of the Care Bears?). Frenchie Dy also was great as Christmas Eve, the resident Oriental, I mean Asian-American, therapist of the neighborhood. I believe it was her first stage role, and she nailed the part. You should see her in her crazy wedding dress! Aiza Seguerra played Gary Coleman, the former child star turned superintendent of Avenue Q. I think the audience didn't get her role, since many are not familiar with the 70's TV show. Still, she had her moments especially during 'Schadenfreude'. Also part of the cast was Calvin Millado as Brian, the unemployed husband of Christmas Eve, and Thea Tadiar as the other Bad Idea Bear and stand-ins for the other puppets. Avenue Q is so much more than a funny and smart musical. It also has the heart too, striking the audience not only with wit, but with wisdom. The rerun is only 'for now' so go watch it if you can!"Want me more than others,
Not exclusively.
That's the way it ought to be."
