Wed, 27 Jul 2011 02:59:30 -0700 If Afghanistan can, why can't we? http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/if-afghanistan-can-why-cant-we http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/if-afghanistan-can-why-cant-we
Afghanistan will launch their own version of The Office! Well, not really. It's called The Minister and instead of being about workers in a paper company, it's set in the offices of the Ministry of Garbage. It also employs the mockumentary technique which was popularized by The Office, of course. Watch the trailer below:

Is there any way I can get to watch this? I found it funny and it has potential for delicious satire. (In one scene, the secretary reads requests of Parliament members: one wants 10 escort vans, another asks for authorization for a drug-trafficking business and the third wants to hire all his cousins and brothers-in-law.) It could turn out to be a stronger government satire than Parks and Recreation. May pinaghuhugutan, knowing the country's tumultuos past, and even their present. It is interesting to note that The Ministry will be shown by ToloTV, the same network that created Afghan Star, a reality-singing competition similar to American Idol. (If you haven't watched the documentary about the show and the contestants, you should. It's amazing).

Bottomline is: I love the mockumentary! There's just so much storytelling potential in the mockumentary format. I won't elaborate, it's in our thesis paper already. Haha! But when will we have our own mockumentary TV show? I hope soon. Fan Club na kaya yun? We'll see. Haha!

Mon, 18 Apr 2011 10:04:00 -0700 Enlightened: A Holy Week Film Festival http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/enlightened-a-holy-week-film-festival http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/enlightened-a-holy-week-film-festival
I don't know about you but my family always watches a series of religious films during Holy Week. The Ten Commandments, Jesus Christ Superstar, random biblical documentaries about how Jerusalem was built or whatever. These have always been staples. So for this year, I will be organizing a movie marathon in another room! Presenting the line-up for Enlightened: A Holy Week Film Festival! Of course, you can also watch these at home; all of these movies are available, if you know where and how. So yay! Try watching one this Holy Week... for a change. :)))

For the documentaries:

Hell House

A haunted house by a fundamentalist Christian church. Instead of monsters, they feature sins and show what happens to sinners in Hell. Fun fun fun fun!

Jesus Camp

A summer camp by a Baptist church. Regarded by some as one of the scariest and disturbing documentaries ever. Oooh.

Religulous

An in-depth look about the current state of world religions. Featuring Bill Maher! *wink*

And the feature films:

The Invention of Lying

Starring and written by Ricky Gervais! In a world where lying is non-existent, what's gonna happen?

Dogma

This film was opposed by the Catholic League so you know this is good!

Saved!

A teen comedy slash religious satire! And Mandy Moore's in it!

Monty Python's Life of Brian

One of the funniest movies ever. And I mean EVER! A man born beside Jesus' stable is mistaken as the Messiah.

Mon, 21 Feb 2011 18:06:00 -0800 Early Morning Rant http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/early-morning-rant http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/early-morning-rant

I just don't understand ABS-CBN News or their motivation for writing and publishing intriguing and politically risky junk articles like this? Why does ABS-CBN news have to surmise, or worse, even assume that China wants something in exchange for this stay of execution of 3 Filipinos in China's death row? Did you even stop to thinks that China might will be reading this garbage and react negatively to this moronic, immature excuse for journalistic chutzpah? Sometimes, our nation's worst enemies are our so-called "too-free press"! Lay off, ABS-CBN News, you're just reinforcing the widening belief that your news section is nothing but a tabloid blather masquerading as a news media outlet.

A comment on an article about the suspension of the execution of 3 Pinoy drug mules in China. Clearly, this person hasn't had Introduction to Political Science. All international relations are built upon the notion of mutuality. We make allies because we want something from them, or we expect something from them: protection, trade, etc. As Dr. de Castro said in the article, there's no free lunch! There are consequences. Sheesh!

That's all.

Wed, 22 Dec 2010 06:21:00 -0800 Exactly http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/exactly http://rollyoaks.posterous.com/exactly

So many untold stories. So many amazing journeys not taken. Friends whose friendships would only deepen and become rich as tested by the trials and tribulations of time.

It should not feel so painful to say good-bye to fictional characters on a television show. Yet the magic of television is how real it made them feel. We invited these characters into our lives once a week for 13 weeks and in that short amount of time, they became part of our family. Some of us live alone and our television friends are dear to us as we see them perhaps more frequently than our own friends and family. Then, for others, we have rich family lives, but we enjoyed sharing the viewing experience together with them once a week to watch these remarkably fun shows.

That is television. It is an invitation into a world where the characters feel real and which are created so that we care about them – cheering when they are happy and torn when they are sad. Thus, the abrupt cancellation of a TV series that captured our imaginations and found a place in our hearts feels akin to the loss of someone close to us. It is a virtual-death. No one actually died, but we still grieve for the loss. We may be able to record the shows for multiple viewings or buy DVD sets, but we will never see how these wonderful characters lives continued. What further stories and adventures did they embark upon? To not know how they went on to live their lives feels wrong.

The fact that the stories just ended without a proper good-bye makes it feel even more disorientating. Network executives rarely consider how difficult it is for attached-viewers to let go. We need an end to the story. We want to see a “happily ever after” moment. No one would buy books if they ended so abruptly. How dare television networks treat us (and those who make the shows) so shabbily?

But instead of ranting about the unfairness of television network decisions, let us remember the moments of joy and wonder that both TERRIERS and UNNATURAL HISTORY brought into our lives. They may not have had proper good-byes, but they did accomplish something much more valuable: they will be remembered. They will join the hallowed halls of television history as “brilliant but canceled.” They will be the shows that everyone talks about for years and decades to come. Their legacy will be that they were once great and will always be remembered as wonderful TV shows who died too soon.

Dboyfromoz1147

Spotted in Zapote, Las PiƱas! I was shocked when I saw this! Then I laughed. I guess it was supposed to be a Christmas decor or something.

"Because of its use by Nazi Germany, the swastika since the 1930s has been largely associated with Nazism and white supremacy in most of the Western countries. As a result, all of its use, or its use as a Nazi or hate symbol is prohibited in some jurisdictions. Because of the stigma attached to the symbol, many buildings that have contained the symbol as decoration have had the symbol removed. Steven Heller, of the School of Visual Arts, has argued that from the moment it was "misappropriated" by the Nazis, it became a mark and weapon of hate, and could not be redeemed."

I'm pretty sure not a lot of people here know how public display of swastikas can cause public outrage. Hello, ano bang connection natin sa Nazi Germany. Still, I found this funny. Although, in India it is a sacred symbol (thanks Outsourced), pero of course, we know what it famously connotes. :))
